Common Sage (Salvia officinalis)

The name sage comes from the Latin “salvare” which means the same as “to cure”. This is based on the medicinal properties of the sage oil which is found predominantly in its leaves. This essential oil prevents the growth of bacteria, viruses and fungi. The tanning agents contained in sage are anti-inflammatory.

Sage is a well-known gargling substance used for sore throats in the form of tea or as a diluted tincture and as sore throat lozenges. Sage also aids digestion and combats flatulence after eating fatty food. It helps to prevent excessive sweating in stress situations or during the menopause.
